Der Auftragseingang wuchs in den ersten acht Monaten des Jahres 2010 um ein gutes Drittel (35 Prozent). Abgesehen vom Bestelleingang im August zeigte sich dabei kein Tempoverlust. Im Juli lag die Kapazitätsauslastung im Schnitt bei 82,9 Prozent (Juli 2009: 69,2 Prozent). Die Beschäftigtenzahl stieg im Juli auf 905.000 und liegt damit nur noch 2,7 Prozent unter dem Niveau des Vorjahres (931.000).
Die deutschen Maschinenexporte lagen im Zeitraum Januar bis Juli 2010 bei 69,5 Mrd. Euro und damit nominal um 5,7 Prozent (3,8 Mrd.) über dem Vorjahreswert. Besonders stark zugenommen haben die Lieferungen nach China (plus 22,7 Prozent auf 8 Mrd. Euro) und Brasilien (plus 39,8 Prozent auf 1,4 Mrd.). Russland, das allerdings im vergangenen Jahr die Branche enttäuscht hatte, zeigt eine Steigerungsrate von 9 Prozent (auf 3,1 Mrd.). Auch die USA, der zweitwichtigste Handelspartner, haben ihre Maschinenimporte aus Deutschland gesteigert, und zwar um 6,2 Prozent (auf 5,5 Mrd.).

Euro an der Spitze, gefolgt von der Schweiz mit 9,4 Prozent oder 2,4 Mrd. Euro, Frankreich mit 7,8 Prozent oder 2 Mrd. Euro und Österreich (Rang 7), Tschechien (Rang 8), den Niederlanden (Rang 9) sowie dem Vereinigten Königreich (Rang 10).
In zunehmendem Maße am Aufschwung beteiligt ist dem Verband zufolge auch das Inlandsgeschäft. In den letzten drei statistisch erfassten Monaten Juni bis August kletterte der gesamte Auftragseingang um 52 Prozent, und die Inlands-Bestellungen legten um 45 Prozent zu. »Die deutsche Investitionstätigkeit hat sich erstaunlich schnell belebt«, führte Wittenstein aus. »Zum einen profitiert die Inlandsnachfrage direkt von der steigenden Auslastung der Produktionskapazitäten, indirekt von Zulieferungen für Exportprodukte. Hinzu kommen möglicherweise noch Vorzieheffekte, weil Investitionen in Deutschland ab dem kommenden Jahr nur noch linear abgeschrieben werden können.«
Die Entwicklung in den Teilbranchen des Maschinenbaus ist weiterhin heterogen. Auch wenn mittlerweile alle Fachzweige im letzten Drei-Monats-Vergleich (Juni bis August 2010/2009) mit ihrem Bestelleingang im Plus liegen, sind sie laut VDMA von sehr unterschiedlichem Niveau aus gestartet und in ihrem Aufholprozess zudem bislang unterschiedlich weit gekommen. Die ersten marschieren demnach wieder stramm auf ihre höchsten Auftragseingangsniveaus zu, etwa Kunststoff- und Gummimaschinen (2007) sowie Textilmaschinen (2006).

Mature market looses its pioneers
When Microssemi takeover of Actel is done it will mean the end to last largely independent vendor of programmable logic. It also means the market is mature and left for playing by the two leaders Altera and Xilinx.
Its CEO (Actels) John East tried to steer the company into more Aerospace Market where the had a success but managing large accounts is harder and harder to manage for an independent vendor. The only way out was to concentrate on smaller accounts where lower performance and addition of analogue function was not without its success back to the top.
From that point of view the take over by Microsemi is seen and a way in the right direction for both.
It is however to be seen if corporate cultures would grow in together or not.

From crisis to markets overheat?
German source IBV: the economy 2010 may even outperform its results from 2008. The economy which shrank by 21% in 2009,and was supposed to be growing by 5% in 2010. A few weeks later the forecast was upgraded to 10% and now they speak of "overheating" the economy and is some cases revenues growth has exceeded 60% over 2009, confirms Mr Christoph Zollitsch. It is hard to believe the market situation at such a level is not sustainable for longer than a quarter.

Automation as an App?
It is very interesting to hear Volker Bibelhause of Phonix Contact saying that in the near future embedded software vendors will have to learn from iphone apps developers. Their software is simple, doing usually one thing at the time, you can pay for it on-line, support is always on-line.
He says the embedded software is too clumsy, too complex and unreliable. Some embedded vendors already work according to new specs that take them into always on line customers.
I am sure this is a trend that is only going to grow among software vendors and end user are going to love.

Be a researcher for an evening on European researchers’ night
Friday 24 September
Geneva, 16 September 2010. On Friday 24 September, CERN[1] will be one of 260 European locations involved in the 5th edition of the European Researchers’ Night, an initiative funded by the European Union’s Science and Society programme aimed at highlighting the appeal of being a researcher and promoting scientific research among young Europeans. CERN is taking part in the BEST project - Being a European Scientist Today – organized in partnership with project coordinator, Frascati Scienza[2], the Erasmus Medical Centre[3] in Rotterdam and EFDA-JET[4].
In keeping with previous editions of the event, scientific research will be presented to the public in an engaging and original way. In Frascati, the entire city with its historical buildings provides the location for an intense programme including science cafés, concerts, debates with scientists and interactive exhibitions, along with visits to the numerous laboratories based in the area, for an entire week starting on September 18 and culminating on the Researchers’ Night.
During the night, a rich parallel programme will engage the public in Frascati, Rotterdam and Geneva from 17:00CEST to 01:00 the following morning. At CERN, some 150 young students from local schools will be given the opportunity to sit side by side with scientists and operators in the LHC accelerator and detectors’ control rooms, experiencing the excitement of research at the high-energy frontier with the world’s most powerful particle accelerator.
The main focus of this 5th edition will be international networking, demonstrated through a live webcast – the Globe Show. From 17:00 to 01:00, the Globe Show will come live from CERN’s Globe of Science and Innovation, Frascati’s main square, the JET laboratory and the Erasmus Medical Centre. The Globe Show will bring together scientists involved with the latest advancements in particle physics, astrophysics, medicine and research on new forms of energy, thanks to an unprecedented network of high-quality teleconferences put together by Tandberg for the project partners. Audiences at all the project’s locations will be able to ask questions of physicists in the control rooms at CERN, scientists from the Ice Cube experiment at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica, Nobel laureate Sam Ting at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, where he is preparing the AMS detector for its journey to the International Space Station, and ESA astronaut Roberto Vittori.
Among the highlights of the webcast is the participation of Nobel Laureate Georges Smoot, (Physics 2006), who will relate how research into the infinitesimally small, such as particle physics at the LHC, is intimately connected to cosmology, the science of the infinitely large.
